About the Emerging Leaders Series

The Emerging Leaders Series provides youth the opportunity to attain life skills through creative environments and focused learning experiences that help identify and foster growth of individual inner leadership capabilities and open eyes to civic responsibilities. Four seminars assist students in reaching untapped talents beyond the traditional high school approach of classroom learning.

  1. Personal Assessment & Presentation Skill  The day sets the tone for the year by building a personal exploration of those drivers contributing to one’s academic preferences, strengths, and weakness. Awareness of brain preference guides the Emerging Leaders in classroom learning, job goals, and general group interaction. Following a session on effective presentations, students are divided into three groups that plan and present at future seminars.

  2. Personal Finance & Etiquette  The seminar introduces the Emerging Leaders to etiquette protocol in a business, classroom, and personal setting. From cell phone etiquette to formal dining utensil use, the Emerging Leaders gain skills necessary to professionally present themselves. The day includes the proper way to eat in a formal dining experience. This marks the first group presentation day.  Following a presentation by Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union on personal financial planning, credit score importance, credit card pitfalls, and developing a realistic savings plan, students present graphics, handouts, and interactive role play events to further discuss the day’s topics.

  3. College Choices  Focusing on college expectations, admissions process and requirements, study habits, and steps needed for successful entrance to a vocation, trade, or educational institution, Emerging Leaders visit Texas Lutheran University and receive a campus tour along with presentations by TLU admission personnel. Student groups present on college transition and managing stress, application preparation, and general college opportunities.

  4. Career Development  The final seminar explores a work setting at Rackspace where students interact with managers, recruiters, and human resources advisers. The day includes a question and answer session with hiring personnel. Emerging Leader presentations include resume development, interview questions, and desired job expectations
